Invictus Poem

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The author William Ernest Henley wishes to tell us that we should be the manager of our own life. So even if there are obstructions / challenges in our life we should defeat them and should become the master of our own fate.

If we merely interpret the word meaning, then we will get the meaning of this poem like this :-

Invictus = Insuperable or Unconquerable.

The title Invictus in Latin symbolizes ‘unconquered’, that means unbeaten or unvanquished. As the name shows the poem tells us to face any risk or pain in our life without showing fear.

William Ernest Henley’s (Poets) life is an illustration for his poem. He suffered from TB of the bone. But the disease didnt conquered his talents and gifts.

So we can conclude that invictus poem is themed on courageousness / braveness.
