William Ernest Henley (W E Henley) was an English poet who is famous for his poem Invictus. He wrote this poem in 1875.

He lived during the time period 1849 – 1903. He died at the age of 53.

William Ernest Henley fell victim of Pott’s disease (Tuberculosis of the bone) at the age of 12. But he survived the situation and wrote the poem “Invictus” from the hospital bed.

The word invictus means unbeatable / unconquerable / undefeated in Latin. Like his poem his life is invictus ie, he will stay in our mind till the end of this universe through his elegant poems.
